| I'm a Linux professional, so the Linux side of the Linode was second nature to me. Im currently using two Linodes for personal use. They provide a VPN connection for me back to the U.S. as I'm currently living in Italy. This allows me to access websites and web services which require a stateside IP address. (for example, Netflix.) I've also managed to establish a FreeNX servers on both Linodes and utilizing the free No Machine client can access a Gnome or XFCE desktop on either machine. Both Linodes also serve as off site testing locations to aid me in trouble shooting network issues at my site. The setup and installation of a Linux distribution through Linode was incredibly quick and easy. It's as simple as selecting disk sizes and distribution and the rest is automated to a base install. When I wanted a second node in a different data center, the image for the first was copied to the other data center (Newark, NJ to London). In less than 30 minutes I had an identical copy running in another data center. The Linode support team has been excellent. On the few occasions I have asked for support, I received responses in less than an hour by email. |

| I've used dozens of webhosts since I first started running websites in the late 90's and it is a definite you get what you pay for industry. Linode is pretty awesome, and while the prices are higher than your normal web host, you get 100% control over everything on your "node" and if you can't figure it out, they have an extensive library of documents that you can read that will help you set anything up on your node. Customer service is top notch too, but they don't monitor your servers for you, nor will they help you with any in-depth setup, but if something is wrong with the machine hosting your node, or you want to upgrade to a better node, they will get it done fast. |
