Description:

WordPress is a free website development and blogging platform.  Wordpress is free because it is "open source" and community developed software.  Wordpress is the most widely used website platform in the world. Wordpress is also a  Content Management System and blogging tool, which means that non-technical users can easily enter content to the website. Wordpress' best feature is probably its fully customizable template system and plug-in architecture. Users can install numerous plug-ins (some free some paid for) that extend the functionality of the blog and add customizable themes or styles. Worpress is also available on virtually every major operating system and powers some of the world's largest (and smallest) websites.

A fantastic website platform

Wordpress has evolved from the simple blogging platform it once was into a full scale CMS that is extremely easy to deploy and use. The huge variety of free or cheap plugins and themes means that it's very likely you'll be able to build a professional-looking website with zero or very low cash expenditure.

The only real flaw I can think of with WordPress is that it is hard to keep up with all the updates - the platform itself, plugins and themes - and failing to do so can leave you exposed either to bugs or security flaws.

Great For Websites, Easy Interface, Lots of Plugins

I've been using Wordpress for a few years to develop websites, and what I love about Wordpress include its flexibility and the ongoing community of developers and resources. Wordpress is open source. There are tons of developers who work on this platform, and it's always evolving.
A Wordpress site is easy for multiple users to add comments, or for an administrator to make changes. The plethora of plug ins adds functionality, and one of the features that I love is the ability to pick which of the plug ins I want to use.
Customizing the site can be accomplished with free templates, or with premium templates. I prefer the premium themes, but if you are on a budget, you can certainly find open source themes that are acceptable. You may need to know some HTML or CSS to be able to completely customize the site.
There are two 'flavors' of Wordpress - the "free" version and a hosted version. They are fairly similar with a few variations in options.
Wordpress is being used for more than 25% of new websites, partially because of it's stability, the wealth of options, and the ease of using it.

The beauty of WordPress - and the reason it is so darn popular - is because it is basically a giant Lego set with endless configurations and possibilities for customization. The fact that it is free to download just makes it that much better.
