| Ooyala took longer to figure out how to pronounce than to learn how to use. Setup was a breeze, with both web and AIR versions of the Backlot management interface. The apps themselves are very well laid out and easy to navigate. Getting up and running was made even more seamless by Ooyala's superb support team. They came to our offices multiple times to walk us through the product's many features, answer questions, and take our suggestions for improvements. We were assigned a specific account manager who fielded all our questions and brought in developers when needed. Throughout the duration of our contract with them, they were responsive, considerate, and helpful with any problems we had. Backlot is a fully featured system that is more than enough for most businesses' needs. But for those who want to really own their workflow, from content to delivery, Ooyala has their extremely robust API. This is where the service really shines, in my opinion. In a variety of programming languages, you can fully access your video catalog, search, label, and more. As a developer, a great API will always win my vote, and they did an exceptional job with theirs. platform is simple enough for non-technical people to use; however, if you want to go even further, you can definitely benefit from designers (customizing players, channels, still frames, etc.), video editors (can quickly top & tail clips, etc.) and developers (leveraging the robust API). Ooyala automatically encodes your video to multiple formats, which takes a huge load off of your video editors. The most intriguing feature for me is the ability to create dynamic channels on the fly. This lets you organize things by label in Backlot, and then perform searches on them, selectively pulling in certain content. This was great for generating unique content for visitors based on collected or input data. |

| Ooyala is a video technology platform that includes custom html/flash players, mrss feeds, video analytics, content uploading/transcoding/management, and tagging architecture. We have integrated Ooyala with our website, SpiritClips.com, using EdgeCast as our CDN (Ooyala defaults to Akamai as its CDN partner). We have also used Ooyala feeds for our Roku, Boxee, and NeoTV applications. Integrating with Ooyala was easy and straightforward. Our developers replaced our Flash players with Ooyala players, and we sent our content to Ooyala to be processed. Ooyala's encoding profiles have saved us hundreds of hours. Our editors used to create 10 versions of each film to upload to our CDN, and now we simply have to upload one master file, and the 10 versions are automatically created. Analytics are also very detailed and helpful; we've been able to integrate their Analytics API into our admin section to get detailed film view information. Customer support is decent but not amazing, especially since we are paying for an additional level of support. I'd say that support does its job, but does not go above and beyond to take care of our needs. Pricing is on the steep side. iOS adaptive bit rate video profiles are an additional charge to the profiles included in the platform fee. The default Roku feed could not be customized, so we had to work around it using the MP4 MRSS feed. Overall, a strong platform, easy to use, lots of features for a price; support and customization could be improved. |
